A modern project in an inspiring ancient city
Kneza Miloša Street is named after Prince Miloša who established Serbia as an autonomous region in the 19th century and who was the richest person in Serbia. With the aid of the engineer, Nichola Evkoitch, the Prince drew up the plans for the thoroughfare known today as Topchider which connects the National Assembly building and the Prince’s palace in the Topchider quarter. The wide avenue, with is cobblestone paving and oak trees quickly became the people of Belgrade’s most popular promenade who affectionally named the road as “the Corso” or Belgrade’s “Champs Elysée”. For over 140 years Kneza Miloša was the preferred location for diplomatic missions, government offices and the city’s cultural and commercial elite.
At the beginning of 2018, Belgrade City Council announced a project to restore Kneza Miloša Street and began construction work that included widening the road to three lanes in each direction, repairing and restoring sidewalks, the addition of bicycle lanes and retail stores which will enrich and restore the city’s central thoroughfare to its former glory.
